Batya Medad, Shiloh
I was born in New York over 50 years ago and made aliya with my husband in 1970, a few weeks after our wedding. First we lived in the old city of Jerusalem, before it became “trendy.” Then we moved to Bayit V’Gan, then two years in London on Shlichut, back to Jerusalem and then finally, in 1981, to Shiloh.
We have five children, three daughters and two sons, aged 30-18. My husband works for the Menachem Begin Heritage Center, and I teach English in the Yeshiva High School Mateh Binyamin in Beit El.
Shiloh
Shiloh is thousands of years old, but for quite awhile it was deserted. No one was living here until the beginning of 1978, when seven young families and a handful of yeshiva students returned Jewish life to the first capital of the Jewish nation.
Renewed Jewish life in Shiloh got its strength and inspiration from the ancient tel. The Yeshivat Hesder Shiloh has been part of Shiloh from its earliest days. Biblical Chana sent her beloved son to the Priest Eli’s exclusive “school,” and we moved to Shiloh When the Ohel Shiloh Elementary School opened. It has grown from the eighteen children in three grades, on its first day, to two eight-grade schools, one for boys and one for girls, with a number of classes per grade. In addition, there is a yeshiva high school.
The population of Shiloh comes from all over the world, a true in-gathering of the exiles. All ages live here, and there are even a few four-generation families. Shiloh is a religious community, but heterogeneous.
We welcome new families, and the newest neighborhoodwith houses for saleoverlooks the ancient tel. As a bonus, every house has a view of the world’s most beautiful sunsets! There are, also, a few houses for rent and possible sale, in the more veteran neighborhoods. For more information, call the office (multi-lingual staff) 02-940-1111.
I can be reached by email, ybmedad@netvision.net.il, or tel/fax 02-994-2328.
There is also a Shiloh web site here. ![]()
